Eating right, IPL style! Here’s how the top players eat right!
Every year our home grown and international cricketers start their IPL journey. 20 overs determine whether their team makes it or not to the finals and for that all the players have to put in their 100% offence strategy on the field. But what goes on behind the screen is as important as on field performance. There is a lot of emphasis on the right training regimen, prioritising recovery and nutrition.
Due to the explosive and high intensity based nature of IPL, the players need to make sure they intake adequate sources of energy from simple or complex carbohydrates, complete protein sources and good sources of unsaturated fats.
Here are some of the top players and how they managed to stay fit and active!
Thalaiva prefers having homemade food and avoids indulgence during the tournament. While in his younger days he had comfort food like butter chicken naan, chocolates and soft drinks as his staple diet. But post quitting test cricket he has opted for more healthier alternatives for these items like kebabs, pitta bread, hummus and avoiding soft drinks. He is fond of dairy products and chooses them as his top source of protein in his diet via various items such as Dahi/yoghurt, milk and whey protein shakes.
Jos prefers having a large breakfast which is high in protein (sometimes multiple rounds of omelets!). But post breakfast, he focuses on having smaller meals with shorter duration between each meal. He believes that adding small bursts of energy works better for him as having a large meal can cause sluggishness which can affect his performance!
Whenever he’s in India for IPL, he ups his water intake as well as electrolytes to remain optimally hydrated to avoid cramps and to beat the heat and humidity. For Jos, whey protein and carbohydrate based shakes are a part of his lifestyle. Post match or an intense workout it can be difficult to eat and get all the nutrients, at such times a shake can be a convenient way to add any extra sources or protein and energy into his system for aiding recovery!
You literally can’t miss seeing him on the pitch! The 6 foot 5 inch all rounder is known to turn eyeballs with his larger than life shots!
When it comes to Pollard, he doesn’t believe in any strict diets and avoids them. Instead, he focuses on getting as many good options in his meals and avoiding or limiting unhealthier ones. When the all rounder does indulge, he goes for his favourite comfort food like fried chicken and ice cream. On the indulgence days he makes sure that he gets additional workouts done to keep his calorie expenditure high to compensate for his extra intake!
The star cricketer is known for his level of fitness on and off the field. He’s an eggetarian and includes a variety of egg and veg protein in his diet with protein shakes being a constant in his routine. To complete his quota of nutrients, Kohli intakes plenty of varied fruit and veggies throughout the day. He relies on coffee for the best start to his day and enjoys his 2 cups per day without any added sugar. If he opts for milk then he looks for plant based options or avoids it. The cricketer loves snacking and opts for nuts and seeds, sprouts or salads as a snack option along with an addition of whey protein shake or smoothies. When it comes to indulgence, Kohli gets it right by controlling portion size when indulging such as smaller portions of dosas, chinese food, dumplings and momos. Along with his 2 cups of coffee the star cricketer also intakes green tea with lemon for its antioxidants and Vitamin c benefits.
Even if you’re not an IPL player you can still introduce some of these easy to follow habits from top cricketers to get ahead with your health and fitness journey!
