There are many eating habits to learn from people living in some parts of the world. They may have not only seen reduced impact of the current pandemic but also an improved quality of life! Everyone wants to live a great life but people living in some of the healthiest countries in the world are definitely getting at it!

While developing countries like India tend to not fare well on such health indexes due to a variety of factors which are taken into consideration by organisations before releasing such data. There are lifestyle and cultural habits as well which contribute towards a country’s Health Index apart from dietary habits. We can find some inspiration from these countries which will help improve our dietary habits as well as increase our health quotient!

1. Spain:

 Spain by far tends to be a highly ranked country when it comes to their eating habits. One of the iconic dishes of Spain is Paella, which is made of rice, saffron, vegetables, chicken, and seafood cooked and served in one pan. It consists of a balanced composition of carbohydrates, protein and fats! The Spanish tend to be influenced by the Mediterranean diet with their food being high in good fats like olive oil (omega-3), protein and plenty of veggies! The Mediterranean diet has been scientifically proven to increase quality as well as longevity of one's life () which can be clearly seen in Spain as the countrymen tend to have the highest life expectancy! The citizens prefer fresh and locally produced options compared to their other european counterparts who prefer processed or fast food in most instances.

2. Japan

This country always tops the list of healthiness in every aspect! The Japanese people have been proven to have the highest proportion of elderly citizens of any country in the world! Clearly there is something in the habits of the Japanese that is helping them live a long life! The island country has an abundance of seafood supply which it uses to its maximum potential! Seafood is full of healthy fats like omega 3 as well as DHA which is shown to aid heart, brain and mental health! The Okinawa prefecture of Japan is famously known as the land of immortals as it has the world’s largest population of centenarians! (people who live up to 100 or more years). There is a practice in Okinawa known as “hara nacho bu” which means to eat until you’re 80% full which is great for portion control and maintaining caloric deficit or maintenance! Japan’s most popular food is sushi and sashimi!

3. Israel

Another country inspired by Mediterranean diets, Israel has always topped the list of countries which have the least dietary-related mortality rates in the world. (Lancet). Some of their common dishes include falafels (gram flour balls) and Hummus (chickpea dish).

4. Italy

The land of pizza and pasta! Just like their Spanish neighbours, the Italians prefer fresh and locally produced whole food ingredients over highly processed and refined ones!

5. Singapore

This asian island country does it right when it comes to its street food as well as healthier alternatives to junk food! Their popular street food is satay which is basically skewered meat/veg protein with peanut sauce which has many heart health related benefits! An average Singaporean’s diet comprises poultry, seafood, rice, noodles, dessert, and snacks. The health conscious government of Singapore had once distributed free smartwatch devices (Fitbits) to their citizens!

6. Iceland

This Nordic country has an active population and prefers outdoor activities. Their diet mostly consists of fresh seafood and veggies. They are also known for some of the highest life expectancies with many in the 80s age group. The Icelandic diet is high in omega 3 fatty acids and is known to have 4 times the amount of seafood compared to other cuisines and countries!

7. Australia

We have all at some point watched Australian cooking shows and the vast variety of fresh food ingredients that they use in their day to day lives! Australians are fond of their fresh produce and don’t have much affinity towards processed food. Their diet is rich in fruit and veggies and all types of meat.
